As part of my commitment to staying in touch with the job search trenches, I joined the NY Metro Job Searchers Group a little while ago and have been pleasantly surprised with what I’ve seen. Here are my findings as well as some background information.
Besides the ability to network with people who are in the same boat as you, you’ll find:
** Daily job leads from employers and recruiters
** Job and career related articles and tips
** Event and on-site networking information
** Links to other job groups, helpful web sites, and job search resources
** Ability to post your resume
What sets the NY Metro Job Searchers Group apart from other online groups is its geographical focus (NY Metro only) and the quality of the members and their threads. Searchers looking for employment in other areas are encouraged to join appropriate lists serving those regions. Although the board is not moderated on a post-by-post basis, the list owner, Richard Kuper, has set forth some rules to maintain the integrity of the list. Spamming, of course, is not allowed. Neither will you encounter get-rich-fast scams on this board. Richard also screens job postings from recruiters and employers to make sure they are suitable for this community.
Currently counting 470 members, the NY Metro Job Searchers Group has a few diligent contributors who are providing leads on a daily basis. A bonus for list members is that some of those people filter information found on generic groups for NY metro specific content, and post it to the list.
The list was founded in August 2002 by Richard Kuper; a business, quality and documentation services consultant, who wanted to extend his networking efforts. After searching online, he soon realized that existing groups either targeted specific industries or were lacking focus, such as nationwide job groups. Looking for a NY-specific community, Richard started the NY Metro Job Searchers Group to fill the void.
Although a great community for the NY tri-state area, just keep in mind that to increase your chances of job search success, you should never rely on one method only. Think multimedia: besides working the Internet, you’ll have to get from behind your computer and mingle with others. Get on the phone and call companies that you think could use someone with your skills. And send out letters.
